About Parking Enforcement
We are here to enforce parking regulations. Our goal is NOT to prey on the public and take your hard earned money. Parking regulations are put into effect to:
- Support public safety,
- Promote the free flow of traffic,
- Help stimulate economic development, and
- Maintain a good quality of life for our
residents and business owners.
Know the Rules . . . .
Common parking regulations, and the thinking behind them, are listed below. Learn them so you may avoid costly fines and support the revitalization of Bloomfield .
Parking Over the Time Limit
What Is It?
Two hour limit parking meters are installed in areas where a high turnover of parking spaces is needed, such as near retail shops and restaurants throughout the Township.
The Reason Why
Customers prefer to park near their destination, whether they are shopping at a local store, dining at one of many restaurants or visiting an office. Time limits on parking improve the chances that a customer will be able to find a parking space - and that a business will be able to make a sale or provide a service. If vehicles were to park all day at these spaces, they would prevent potential customers from accessing nearby spaces. The business owner is hurt as well as the customer who decides to go elsewhere because parking is too difficult.
Meter Feeding
What is it?
Two hour limit meters are located in areas where high turnover of parking is needed. Meter feeders park beyond the time limit by continuously visiting the meter to put more money in and extend parking time.
The Reason Why
Meter feeders monopolize parking spaces intended for customers who are shopping, dining and conducting businesses in Bloomfield.
Double Parking
What is it?
Double Parking is when someone parks a vehicle in the road alongside another vehicle that is parked in a legal space. Double parking is against the law.
The Reason Why
When someone double parks, they interfere with the flow of traffic. Double parking is one of the leading causes of traffic congestion. It is also a major safety issue. Many of our streets are not wide enough to accommodate double-parked vehicles and emergency vehicles moving through the streets. No one can predict when an emergency will arise. It is critical that we keep our streets clear so that emergency vehicles can reach their destinations quickly and safely.
